How To Be More Confident Without Makeup

During lockdown many of us have found ourselves going makeup free this year - and our skin is loving the relief. (PJs and bushy eyebrows anyone?)

Though it’s been emotionally tense, this period of being at home and not having ‘places to go, people to see’ has allowed us to give our skin a break from cosmetics, chemicals and pollution. Our skin finally has had a chance to breathe.

Not only that, but it’s allowed many of us to feel more confident wearing nothing but our natural beauty.

“The movement doesn’t have to do with makeup or no makeup. It has to do with who you are, what makes you feel good, and how you want to express that.”
Alicia Keys (Musician & Activist)

Inspired by Alicia Keys, the iconic music artist, activist, and global advocate of the #NoMakeup Movement since 2016, we’ve put together 8 daily practices to embrace our natural raw beauty, help our skin become the best it can be, and guide you on how to feel confident without wearing makeup.

1. Stay hydrated.
Our skin contains 64% water. It’s recommended to drink between 6 to 8 glasses of water every day to keep your cells purified, recharged, and working optimally.

2. Stay nourished.
Eating balanced meals everyday with a colourful plate of nutrients that blends different fruits, vegetables and protein will impact your skin and body in the long term. The more natural colour in your meal, the better!

3. Wake up your face.
Try out facial massage techniques and tools such as gua sha, jade rollers or even using your fingers along with a balancing face oil to get the blood flowing. Light upward strokes!

4. Treat your skin.
Take the time to do a hydrating face mask every few weeks, or indulge in a 10-minute face massage. It’s a relaxing self-care practice that does your mental health - as well as your skin - a world of good.

5. Take the time to develop a skin care routine.
Don’t worry about fads or trends - discover what works for you. Our skin is our largest organ and deserves your TLC. Explore, experiment with, and enjoy your skincare ritual.

6. Use natural alternatives to enhance your features.
Our Make-Up Melt coconut oil cleanser, for example, can be used as an eyelash/eyebrow conditioner, as well as a lip balm. Enhance your dewy glow, naturally.

7. Take care of your wellbeing.
Our mental health directly impacts our skin. Stress, sleeplessness, fatigue and anxiety lead to breakouts and more. Aim to reduce stress, try to get a good night’s sleep, and make sure you unwind every night after work.

8. Embrace your uniqueness.
Every freckle, wrinkle and mark is a part of you — and that’s beautiful. Remember: You are enough!

Although we may celebrate the celebrities for promoting the #nomakeup selfies, It’s vital to remember that, as individuals in the limelight, celebrities have access to top quality spas, treatments, surgeries, quick-fixes, supplements and beauty teams dedicated to helping them enhance their natural beauty in ways that they might not publicly disclose.

Remind yourself that there’s no expectation or benchmark for natural beauty. Natural beauty is pimple marks, deep eye-bags, bushy eyebrows, laughter lines, a chipped front tooth, scars and freckles. That’s raw, that’s real. That’s beautiful. ♡

Let's start embracing the skin we live in with these 8 simple steps.
